In the early morning hours of September 1, 2024, the life of 23-year-old Haley Leann Mackin, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in Eugene, Oregon. At approximately 3 a.m., Eugene Police responded to calls reporting a loud argument followed by the sound of gunshots near the intersection of Royal Avenue and Ruskin Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mackin deceased at the scene, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led to
a suspect. Within a couple of hours, at 5:05 a.m., police located and arrested 24-year-old Brandon Daniel Smith in connection with the shooting. The apprehension took place near 4th Avenue and Pearl Street, with assistance from the Springfield Police Department and the Lane County Sheriff's Office. It was later revealed that Mackin and Smith had been in a previous relationship.
Following his arrest, Brandon Daniel Smith was lodged at the Lane County Jail. He faces multiple serious charges, including Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Tampering with Physical Evidence. The community was left shaken by the violent incident, with neighbors expressing their shock and concern over the killing that occurred in their midst.
