On the evening of January 28, 2023, a fatal encounter unfolded inside a convenience store in Gary, Indiana, claiming the life of 26-year-old Alexander Hudson. The incident, which took place at the One Stop Convenience Store on West 45th Avenue, began as a planned marijuana transaction. What started as a sale, however, quickly escalated into a deadly robbery.
Surveillance footage from the store captured the events of that night, showing two individuals, later identified as Melvion M.
Delphie and Larry Saunders, returning to the location multiple times. During one of the interactions with Hudson, Delphie observed that Hudson was carrying a firearm. This observation allegedly prompted Delphie to form the intent to steal the weapon. Upon confronting Hudson inside the store, a struggle ensued over the firearm.
During the physical altercation between Delphie and Hudson, the second man, Larry Saunders, who was also armed, drew his handgun. In the ensuing chaos, Alexander Hudson was fatally shot. The surveillance video then showed Delphie taking Hudson’s firearm before both men fled the scene. The entire incident, from the initial confrontation to the fatal shooting and subsequent theft, was recorded, providing critical evidence for investigators.
In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement officials worked to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for Hudson's death. In February 2023, charges were filed against 18-year-old Larry Saunders, including Murder, Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun. The case was initially sealed as investigators and the U.S. Marshals Task Force worked to locate him. On March 23, 2023, Saunders was taken into custody in the Aetna area of Gary and booked into the Lake County Jail. He faced additional charges related to the use of a firearm during the commission of an offense. Melvion M. Delphie, 23, was also apprehended. In July 2025, Delphie entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to murder. As a result of his plea, additional charges of robbery and theft were dismissed, and he was sentenced to 45 years in the Indiana Department of Correction for his role in the death of Alexander Hudson.
