In the quiet neighborhood on the west side of Indianapolis, the evening of February 13, 2023, was shattered by violence that claimed the life of 30-year-old Sabrina Gail Cowan. A female with a vibrant spirit, Cowan was discovered unresponsive in a yard nestled between two houses in the 3500 block of West 12th Street, suffering from injuries that were later determined to be from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to Eskenazi Hospital, but her life could not be saved, and she was pronounced dead a short time after her arrival.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the tragic event. As detectives delved into Cowan's life, a history of a turbulent and violent relationship with her boyfriend, 38-year-old Troy Briscoe, began to surface. Witnesses recounted a chilling incident on New Year's Eve, just weeks before her death, where Briscoe had allegedly threatened Cowan with a firearm, a dark premonition of the tragedy to come. Friends of Cowan revealed that shortly before her murder, she had expressed that she was 'done with' her tumultuous relationship with Briscoe.
The investigation meticulously pieced together the events of that fatal night. Inside Cowan's home, officers found tell-tale signs of a violent struggle: broken fingernails, spent shell casings, and a pair of glasses lay strewn on the floor. Crucial evidence was also collected in the form of DNA found on multiple beer bottles and a cigarette at the scene, which was later matched to Briscoe. The case against him was further solidified by a neighbor's security camera, which captured footage of Briscoe entering Cowan's home and then, shortly after, running to his car and speeding away from the scene. Cellphone data also played a pivotal role, placing Briscoe in the vicinity of Cowan's home at the time of the shooting.
In August 2023, the diligent work of law enforcement culminated in the arrest of Troy Briscoe. He was formally charged with the murder of Sabrina Gail Cowan and with being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm. In a subsequent trial, a Marion County judge found Briscoe guilty, and in April 2025, he was sentenced to 62 years in prison for the murder. An additional six years were added to his sentence for the firearm conviction, ensuring that the man responsible for silencing a bright and beloved life would face the consequences of his actions.
