On the evening of October 23, 2023, law enforcement officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a residence on the west side of Indianapolis, Indiana, following reports of a person shot. The incident occurred in the 5700 block of West Ray Street, located near the intersection of West Washington Street and Interstate 465. Upon arriving at the scene shortly before 9:00 p.m., first responders discovered a male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The individual was identified as 24-year-old Lavoris R. Johnson, a Black man who was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The initial investigation conducted by IMPD homicide detectives revealed that a family disturbance had taken place inside the home just moments before the shooting occurred. Authorities learned that an argument had escalated into violence, resulting in gunfire. The scene was secured, and detectives began interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence to determine the specific circumstances that led to the fatal altercation.
Police quickly identified a suspect at the scene: 22-year-old Larenzo Johnson, who was confirmed to be the younger brother of the victim. Larenzo was detained for questioning by homicide detectives and was subsequently arrested. According to police reports and court documents later filed in the case, Larenzo admitted to investigators that he had shot his brother following the family dispute. He was taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Jail on a preliminary charge of murder. The Marion County Coroner’s Office later ruled the death a homicide caused by gunshot wounds.
