Stacy Marie Sullivan Mondal, a 40-year-old mother of five, was shot and killed on Monday, November 6, 2023, while she was a passenger in a vehicle with her husband and their two youngest children. The family was on their way from their home in the Bright community to a photography appointment in Ohio. The incident occurred near the Indiana/Ohio state line.
An autopsy later revealed that Stacy had sustained seven gunshot wounds to the left side of her body, which resulted in fatal perforations to her heart, lungs, and liver.
Her husband, Mohammed Mondal, 45, contacted law enforcement after the shooting. Initially, he reported that he had accidentally shot his wife. His account of the events then shifted, with him claiming he shot her in self-defense after an argument. He alleged that they were experiencing marital problems and that she had struck him with her cell phone and reached for a gun in the center console before he fired his own weapon. Following an investigation, Mohammed Mondal was arrested and charged with murder and two counts of neglect of a dependent.
The case initially proceeded in Dearborn County, Indiana, where the family resided. However, as the case was being prepared for trial, new medical evidence regarding the precise time of Stacy's death suggested the shooting and her subsequent passing most likely occurred in Ohio. This jurisdictional issue led to the dismissal of the charges in Indiana. Subsequently, a grand jury in Hamilton County, Ohio, indicted Mohammed Mondal on charges of murder and felonious assault. In the end, he accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to a term of 25 to 30 years in prison for the death of his wife.
