On the evening of December 23, 2023, in a residential neighborhood on the west side of Indianapolis, the life of Matthew Lee Kelley, a 43-year-old White/Caucasian male, was tragically cut short. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Lansdowne Road around 7:00 p.m. following a report of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Matthew Kelley suffering from critical gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene, but despite their efforts, Kelley succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. that same evening. Investigators believe the shooting was the tragic culmination of a family disturbance. The incident cast a somber shadow over the holiday season for the Indianapolis community.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, one individual was taken into custody by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in connection with the incident. However, after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, this person was later released from custody. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in the case. Homicide detectives are continuing to piece together the events that led to Kelley's death and are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in their investigation.
