In a tragic turn of events on February 27, 2024, two-year-old Jarel Miles, a Black male, lost his life in his Indianapolis home. The young boy's day took a fatal turn when he discovered a loaded handgun inside his mother's purse. The incident occurred in a residence located in the 3700 block of North Dearborn Street, where Jarel and his mother, Tiara Reeves, had just returned after running errands.
According to police reports, Ms.
Reeves was attending to household chores when her son informed her he was going to the bathroom. Shortly thereafter, a loud noise echoed through the home, which she initially mistook for a balloon or a light bulb bursting. When she went to check on her son, she found him unresponsive on a bed with a gunshot wound to his head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The subsequent investigation revealed that the firearm Jarel had accessed was typically removed from his mother's purse and secured. However, on this particular day, the weapon remained in her handbag. In the wake of her son's death, Tiara Reeves was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death. She was later arrested on June 21, 2024.
Court proceedings followed, and Tiara Reeves was ultimately sentenced for her role in the tragic accident. She received a nine-year sentence, with two of those years to be served in prison. The remaining seven years of her sentence were suspended, to be followed by a four-year period of probation. The sentencing also included stipulations for mental health evaluations and treatment.
