On a Sunday afternoon in early June, a shopping trip to a Camby, Indiana, Walmart ended in tragedy for 34-year-old Matthew Steele of Indianapolis. On June 2, 2024, in the parking lot of the store located at 8191 Upland Way, a dispute escalated into a fatal encounter.
Witnesses reported a verbal and physical altercation between Steele and a 19-year-old man. The confrontation took a deadly turn when a firearm was produced and fired, striking Steele in the torso.
Hendricks County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the scene around 1:44 p.m. and arrived to find Steele wounded. He was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The 19-year-old man involved in the altercation was detained at the scene by law enforcement. Following a thorough investigation by Hendricks County Detectives, the case was presented to the prosecutor's office. Ultimately, the prosecutor declined to file criminal charges in the matter, citing evidence of self-defense. The 19-year-old was subsequently released from custody.
