In the early evening of September 6, 2024, Kierra Danielle Dotson, a 37-year-old female, was sitting in her parked car in front of her home on Lupine Drive on the west side of Indianapolis. What happened next was a tragically swift and violent act, captured on a home surveillance camera. A red Dodge vehicle pulled up alongside her car, and for a few brief seconds, gunfire erupted before the suspect's vehicle sped away.
Emergency services were called to the scene where they found Dotson critically injured from gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a local hospital, but succumbed to her injuries a short time later.
Known affectionately as 'Kia' to her family and friends, she was a mother to a teenage daughter and was described as having a giant smile and an infectious laugh. Her family, heartbroken by the senseless act, said she had recently moved back into her aunt and uncle's home to get back on her feet financially. They believe she had just returned from dropping her daughter off at a friend's house when she was ambushed. In the months that followed, her loved ones pleaded for justice, grappling with the mystery of who would have wanted to harm her.
For over nine months, the investigation continued. Investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department had located the red Dodge seen in the surveillance footage and had spoken with a person of interest, but no arrests were made, leaving the case unsolved for a period. Then, on June 11, 2025, a breakthrough came when the IMPD's Violent Crimes Unit arrested 27-year-old Lamar Willis. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Willis with murder in connection with Kierra Dotson's death. He had his initial court hearing on June 16, bringing a new development in the quest for answers for Kierra's grieving family.
