In the early morning hours of October 27, 2024, a dispute outside a nightclub on State Street in Columbus, Indiana, tragically cut short the life of 32-year-old Bradford Alexander Kendrick Brooks. An argument escalated into gunfire, and Brooks, who was in the vicinity, was struck by a bullet. He was rushed to a hospital near Indianapolis by a friend for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Bradford Brooks succumbed to his injuries on November 9, 2024.
The Columbus Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 3:30 a.m. and, upon arrival, spoke with several witnesses who described the altercation. Their investigation led to the arrest of 43-year-old Pedro Luis Rivera Ayala on October 28. Initially, Ayala faced several preliminary charges, including aggravated battery, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and pointing a firearm at another person. Following Brooks' death, the Bartholomew County Prosecutor's Office began the process of amending the charges to include homicide.
Ultimately, Pedro Luis Rivera Ayala was convicted on a charge of reckless homicide for his role in the fatal shooting. He was sentenced to six years in prison, the maximum penalty for the Level 5 felony. The investigation determined that Brooks was an innocent bystander in the incident that led to his untimely death. The case marked the first homicide in Columbus for that year.
