Gabriel Emanuel Martinez, a 17-year-old male from Columbus, Indiana, was fatally shot on the evening of September 11, 2026, during an altercation involving a group of teenagers at the Parkview Rental Townhomes on the city's east side. Police and emergency personnel were dispatched to the 3200 block of Country Brook Street North at approximately 6:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.
Officers arrived to find Martinez outside an apartment building suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that a physical fight had broken out among several juveniles shortly before the shooting. According to the probable cause allegations later described in court records, 17-year-old Tyshawn Bryant was present as the confrontation unfolded. Authorities allege Bryant went back inside his nearby residence, retrieved a 9mm handgun and placed it in his waistband before returning to the area. Martinez then moved toward the ongoing fight. Bryant reportedly told detectives that he saw Martinez reach toward a pocket, although Bryant acknowledged that he never actually saw Martinez remove or display a weapon. Investigators allege Bryant then pulled out the handgun, racked the slide and fired approximately two or three rounds, striking Martinez.
After the gunfire, Martinez collapsed and was bleeding as people began fleeing the area. Police said Bryant left in a truck with two other juveniles and traveled to Indianapolis. Court records allege that while there, Bryant met with a person he knew only as “Fred,” who provided him with different clothing and took possession of the clothes Bryant had been wearing, reportedly in an effort to eliminate potential gunshot-residue evidence. That individual was also alleged to have helped dispose of the 9mm handgun used in the shooting. Publicly available reports do not indicate that the two juvenile witnesses or the person identified as “Fred” had been charged in connection with Martinez's death as of September 24, 2026.
Columbus detectives continued developing leads, executed search warrants and traced Bryant's whereabouts to Marion County. Investigators contacted members of his family, who eventually picked him up in Indianapolis and brought him back to Columbus. Bryant then turned himself in to the Columbus Police Department. During an interview with detectives, authorities say Bryant admitted firing multiple rounds and acknowledged shooting Martinez, but claimed that his intention had only been to frighten him rather than kill him. Bryant was taken into custody and placed at the Bartholomew County Youth Services Center.
On September 17, Bartholomew County Prosecuting Attorney Lindsey Holden formally charged Bryant with one count of murder and sought a felony firearm enhancement. Because Bryant was 17 and charged with murder, the case proceeded in adult court under Indiana law rather than through juvenile court. The prosecution is pending in Bartholomew Circuit Court before Judge Kelly Benjamin. No trial or conviction had been reported as of September 24, 2026, and the murder charge and related allegations remain accusations to be resolved through the court process.
