Demetrius Rayshone Hardy, born on December 31, 1980, in Chicago, Illinois, was the third eldest child of Patricia Allison (Hardy) and the late Elmer Ray Coleman Sr. He embraced Christianity early in life, being baptized by Pastor J.P. White at Greater Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Chicago. Later, he joined Broadview Seventh-day Adventist Church in Broadview, Illinois, where Pastor Marvin Brown baptized him, and he remained an active member until his passing.
Demetrius's educational journey began at Mason Elementary School, continued through John Hope College Prep High School, and culminated with a high school diploma from Morgan Park High School. He pursued higher education at Northern Illinois University and Robert Morris University, earning an Associate’s Degree, a Bachelor of Business Administration with a Management Concentration, and a Master of Business Administration with a Human Resources Management Concentration.
At Morgan Park High School, Demetrius was recognized as a natural leader. He played a pivotal role in the Class of 1998, serving as a committee member and co-treasurer. Over 15 years, he dedicated himself to organizing fundraisers, volunteering at school events, and supporting families during challenging times. He was instrumental in planning annual alumni picnics and milestone reunions, including preparations for his class's 25th reunion in 2023.
Professionally, Demetrius began as an office assistant during high school. He joined Sonic Air Couriers on September 5, 2000, as a lead dispatcher. After Sonic merged into UPS Supply Chain Solutions in 2003, he advanced to a specialist role in the Gateway Air Import Department until 2017. He then became a Compliance Coordinator, overseeing training and ensuring TSA credential compliance. In 2018, Demetrius championed the unionization of operations clerks, leading negotiations with Teamsters Local 705 and serving as a dedicated union steward. He also pursued studies at DeVry University, funded by the Teamsters, to enhance his understanding of labor relations and contract management.
Tragically, on January 25, 2023, at the age of 42, Demetrius was fatally shot in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood. He is remembered for his generosity, passion, and unwavering commitment to family and friends. Preceded in death by his father, grandparents, sister, aunts, and uncles, Demetrius leaves behind his mother, stepfather, grandmother, five sisters, five brothers, and numerous extended family members and friends. His legacy of leadership and service continues to inspire those who knew him.
