Michael Burnette, a 43-year-old man, was fatally shot in the South Chicago neighborhood on November 21, 2023. The incident occurred when Burnette was standing on the sidewalk in the 7900 block of South Oglesby Avenue around 9:35 p.m. Someone opened fire, and Burnette suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was admitted in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, Burnette died from his injuries on the following Friday, as confirmed by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The shooting is believed to be related to gang violence, with Burnette described as an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. As of the current date, no arrests have been made, and Area Two detectives are still investigating the case.
Burnette's family, particularly his mother Felicia, has been actively seeking justice and trying to uncover more information about the incident. They have faced numerous challenges, including financial and health issues, while trying to keep the investigation alive. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support the family in increasing the reward amount for information leading to an arrest, printing and distributing flyers, and potentially hiring a private investigator. The campaign also aims to support local community advocacy and help other families seeking victim justice.
The family has established a $20,000 reward as of January 10, 2024, in hopes of securing an arrest and bringing closure to their loved one's tragic death. The community is being encouraged to support the family through donations and by spreading awareness about the case.
