On February 8, 2023, 26-year-old Joshua Ewing of Rockford, Illinois, was fatally shot in a car-to-car incident. Witnesses reported that occupants of a white SUV fired at Ewing's vehicle near the intersection of Chestnut and Winnebago Streets around 10:30 a.m. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Ewing managed to drive to the area of 1st Avenue and Charles Street, where he crashed his car. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 11:20 a.m.
