On November 19, 2023, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Laine Huff, a 38-year-old resident of Homer Glen, Illinois, was killed in an apparent murder-suicide incident at her home. The incident involved her husband, Michael Huff, a police sergeant with the Glendale Heights Police Department, who also took his own life.
The incident was reported after a 911 call was made around 5:46 p.m., with the caller stating that they had heard the homeowners arguing followed by the sound of gunshots coming from the residence. Deputies from the Will County Sheriff's Office responded to the 13600 block of Shannon Drive and found both Michael and Jackie Huff lying on the kitchen floor, covered in blood and suffering from gunshot wounds. They were confirmed dead by the Northwest Homer Fire Department.
An investigation determined that Michael Huff used a small-caliber handgun, which was found near the victims, to commit the murder-suicide. The couple had been experiencing marital issues, with Jacquelyn Huff filing for divorce on October 20, 2023. There had also been a previous incident on October 14, 2023, where deputies were called to the Huffs’ home to investigate a report of domestic battery, involving Jacquelyn Huff’s father and Michael Huff.
The lawsuit filed by Jacquelyn Huff’s family, specifically her father Charles Fonte, alleges that the village and police department were aware of Michael Huff’s history of suicidal and homicidal ideation, as well as possible post-traumatic stress disorder. The lawsuit also claims that Huff had used village resources to stalk, harass, and intimidate Jacquelyn Huff, and that at least one of his coworkers may have assisted him in tracking her down.
Michael Huff had served the community for over 20 years and was known for his service with the Glendale Heights Police Department. Jacquelyn Huff was a former employee of the Village of Glendale Heights.
