Gustavo Suarez, a 27-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot in the early hours of March 17, 2024. The incident occurred in an alley in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood, specifically at the 5200-block of South Central Avenue near 52nd Street, just a few blocks from Midway Airport.
According to the reports, Suarez was in the alley when a black truck drove up, and an unknown number of people inside the vehicle began shooting at him.
Suarez was shot once in the right side of his chest and was subsequently taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he was pronounced dead.
Initially, the Chicago police were searching for the gunman, and the case was under investigation by Area One Detectives. However, on May 9, 2024, a significant development occurred when Alberto Rosas, a 29-year-old man, was charged with the murder of Gustavo Suarez. Rosas was allegedly riding in the truck when he shot Suarez. He was arrested on May 9 in the 6800 block of West Archer Avenue and was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder. A detention hearing was scheduled for Rosas following his arrest.
The shooting highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago, with Suarez being one of the victims lost to such violence in the city.
