Sammie Tyrone McClinton, a 45-year-old resident of Springfield, Illinois, was fatally shot on July 25, 2024. The incident occurred in the 700 block of North 5th Street, where McClinton was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to HSHS St. John's Hospital by EMS but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 12:03 p.m..
The Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, identified McClinton as the victim of the shooting. Following the incident, Springfield police responded quickly to the scene, aided by ShotSpotter alerts. Less than two hours after the initial call, police arrested Shelton A. Woolridge, a 27-year-old also from Springfield, in the 2700 block of South MacArthur Blvd. The firearm used in the homicide was recovered by detectives during the arrest.
Shelton A. Woolridge was taken into custody and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm by Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser. Woolridge was expected to appear in court for his first appearance and a petition to detain hearing on the afternoon of July 26, 2024.
