Darryl Hill, a 43-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot on August 17, 2024, on the city's West Side. The incident occurred in the 0-100 block of South Lavergne Avenue just after 2:30 p.m. According to the police, an armed offender approached Hill and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
Hill suffered gunshot wounds to the neck and back and was transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The police investigation led to the arrest of 40-year-old Jonathan Atkinson, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Hill's death. Atkinson was arrested on Thursday, August 22, 2024, and the charges were announced by the Chicago police the following day.
The family of Darryl Hill gathered to remember him with a balloon release shortly before the announcement of Atkinson's charges. The community came together to honor Hill's memory as the investigation and legal proceedings continued.
