Corporal Brandon Schreiber, a 32-year-old officer with the Newton County Sheriff's Office in northwest Indiana, succumbed to gunshot wounds on September 11, 2024, after being injured in a shootout on September 1, 2024. The incident occurred during a vehicle pursuit that began in Iroquois County, Illinois, where officers were chasing a suspect believed to be armed and possibly holding a hostage.
The pursuit, initiated by the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office, crossed into Indiana before returning to Illinois, where the suspect crashed his vehicle in Sheldon, Illinois. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Andrew Roselius of Clifton, Illinois, exited his vehicle and exchanged gunfire with responding officers. Despite initial reports of a possible hostage, no hostage was found in Roselius' vehicle. Roselius was shot and killed at the scene by an officer.
Corporal Schreiber, who had served with the Newton County Sheriff's Department for five years, was struck by gunfire during the exchange and was transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He was later transferred to the Carle Trauma Center in Urbana, Illinois, where he remained on life support until his organs could be donated. Schreiber was an organ donor, and his sacrifice is expected to help many others.
Schreiber is survived by his wife and two young children. His death has been met with widespread condolences and tributes from law enforcement agencies and the public across the country. A memorial procession was held to honor him as his body was transported from Carle Hospital to Springfield, Illinois.
