On the evening of November 7, 2016, 17-year-old African American male Jeremiah Parker was fatally shot during an attempted carjacking in Chicago's South Austin neighborhood. Around 8:30 p.m., as Jeremiah exited a vehicle in the 500 block of North Lockwood Avenue, an assailant wearing a black hoodie approached and demanded his car keys. A struggle ensued, during which Jeremiah was shot in the chest and arm.
He was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that night.
Jeremiah was a senior at Roosevelt High School and a standout football player, known for his versatility on the field as a running back, linebacker, and quarterback. He had aspirations of playing college football and viewed the sport as a pathway to a better future. His coach, Germaine Padilla, described him as an exceptional young man with a deep voice and a radiant smile, noting that he embodied the qualities they desired in their team members.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police investigations led to the arrest of 19-year-old Kentrell Creamer in October 2017. Creamer was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail. However, after nearly two years in custody, prosecutors dropped all charges against him in October 2019, citing insufficient evidence to meet the burden of proof required for prosecution.
The case drew further attention when it was revealed that Creamer's arrest and detention were the result of investigative misconduct by police officers. A lawsuit filed on Creamer's behalf alleged that officers failed to follow proper procedures during witness interviews, leading to his wrongful arrest. In February 2025, the City Council's Finance Committee considered a $250,000 settlement to compensate Creamer for his wrongful incarceration.
As of now, no other suspects have been publicly identified or charged in connection with Jeremiah Parker's death. The case remains unresolved, leaving his family and community seeking justice for the loss of a promising young life.
