On May 7, 1971, Jack Slaughter, a 21-year-old African American male, was found dead alongside his 23-year-old brother, Frank Slaughter, and another man named Arthur Lee Walson, also 21, in East St. Louis, Illinois. The victims had been shot and stabbed, and their deaths remained unsolved for nearly a decade.
