Merian L. Smith, a 15-year-old African American male from Peoria, Illinois, tragically passed away on November 9, 2022, following a shooting incident. Merian, affectionately known as "Jack," was a sophomore at Peoria Central High School and an active member of the Central Lions Football team. He was known for his kind-hearted nature, friendliness, and dedication to helping his community by cutting grass, shoveling snow, and assisting neighbors. Merian was also a member of Rising Sun Christian Church, where he participated as a Praise Dancer and in the Men’s Choir.
On November 7, 2022, Merian was one of two individuals injured in a shooting that occurred in the 500 block of West Gift Avenue in Peoria. The Peoria Police Department responded to the scene after receiving three separate Shot Spotter alerts, which recorded a total of 21 rounds fired. Merian was transported to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in serious condition and was later pronounced brain dead at 10:11 a.m. on November 9, 2022. The Peoria County Coroner, Jamie Harwood, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting the heartbreak of losing a child to gun violence.
The investigation into Merian's death led to the arrest of multiple suspects. An 18-year-old male, who was a juvenile at the time of the incident, was arrested for first-degree murder, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card, and unlawful possession of a handgun under 21. Another suspect, 18-year-old Erick D. Jackson, was also arrested in connection with the murder. Jackson faced charges of first-degree murder. Additionally, 19-year-old Breon K. Smith was arrested for aggravated reckless driving, criminal damage to government property, fleeing/eluding police, obstructing an officer, and traffic violations. A juvenile passenger in the vehicle was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a handgun without a FOID card.
The Peoria Police Department continues to investigate the case, urging community members with information to come forward. The arrests and ongoing investigation reflect the community's efforts to seek justice for Merian L. Smith and address the broader issue of gun violence affecting the youth in Peoria.
