Stephani Lopez Ramirez, a 17-year-old Hispanic girl, lived in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, just after 12:30 p.m., police responded to a call at an apartment in the 700 block of North Avers Avenue, also in Humboldt Park. Inside, they discovered Stephani, who had been shot. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:01 p.m.
An autopsy conducted the next day determined that she had died from a single gunshot wound that traveled through her arm and into her chest. The Cook County medical examiner’s office officially ruled her death a homicide.
Investigators soon took a person of interest into custody: a 19-year-old man who had been in the apartment with Stephani. According to police, the man initially told officers that Stephani had shot herself, but authorities found that her wound was not consistent with being self-inflicted. He also reportedly gave conflicting accounts of who had brought the firearm into the home. An eyewitness told police they had previously seen the 19-year-old with the same handgun and that he was the only person in the bedroom with Stephani when the shot was fired.
Following the initial investigation, authorities arrested the 19-year-old man and charged him with a Class 3 felony of involuntary manslaughter. He was scheduled for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building on Friday, October 4, 2024. However, when the man appeared before a judge, Cook County prosecutors formally dropped the charge against him. He was then released from custody.
The man’s defense attorney described Stephani’s death as "a very tragic accident" and stated that he and his client were cooperative with the case. In a public statement, the state's attorney's office explained its decision, saying, "After a thorough review of information presented to us by police, we concluded that the totality of the evidence was insufficient to meet our burden of proof to file criminal charges." The office added that they were open to a further review if new information was brought to them.
As of October 2024, no one is charged in the shooting death of Stephani Lopez Ramirez, and her case remains unsolved.
