Jennifer Hamilton, a 47-year-old woman from Chicago, IL, was tragically killed on April 27, 2022. Jennifer, a dedicated mental health specialist at Cermak Health Services at Cook County Jail, was fatally shot by her estranged husband, Alphonso Hamilton, in the parking lot of a Target store at Brickyard Mall on Chicago's Northwest Side. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. while Jennifer was on a video call with her doctor.
Despite having an order of protection against Alphonso, he confronted her during the call, leading to a fatal altercation.
On the morning of the incident, Jennifer drove to the home she once shared with Alphonso and parked in the lot to begin a teleconference call with her doctor. During the call, she noticed Alphonso arriving and informed her doctor about the order of protection. Despite her initial lack of concern, the situation escalated when Alphonso followed her to the Target parking lot. As Jennifer exited her vehicle, Alphonso approached her, and after a brief exchange, he shot her multiple times. Jennifer was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center shortly after the shooting.
Alphonso Hamilton, 50, was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail. He turned himself in to the Schiller Park Police Department shortly after the incident, confessing to the shooting. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of domestic violence, with Jennifer having obtained an emergency restraining order against Alphonso just days before her death. The tragic event underscored the need for more effective measures to protect victims of domestic violence and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
