In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 26, 2023, the city of Columbus, Georgia, was rattled by the violent death of a beloved community figure. Dr. James Lee McTyre, Jr., a 66-year-old Black man, was discovered deceased in his vehicle, which had crashed into the bushes in the parking lot of the China Inn restaurant on Wynnton Road. The Muscogee County Coroner's Office would later confirm that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:10 a.m.
