On April 5, 2023, 23-year-old Black male Derek Antonio Bowden Jr. was killed in Columbus, Georgia, in a shooting on Old Buena Vista Road, a case that unfolded in the late afternoon and immediately drew a homicide investigation. Columbus police said officers were dispatched around 5:15 p.m. to the 400 block of Old Buena Vista Road, and the Muscogee County coroner said he was pronounced dead at 5:40 p.m. from a gunshot wound.
