In the summer of 2023, on June 20th, a burst of gunfire shattered the late afternoon peace in a southwest Atlanta neighborhood, leaving a scene of tragedy and unanswered questions. Deontae “Boola” Brown, a 22-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in what authorities have described as a targeted attack. The incident unfolded around 5:30 p.m. on the steps of an apartment building at 765 McDaniel St. SW, near a senior housing community.
Brown was not alone when the violence erupted; he was with two other young men, simply sitting and eating chips.
The suddenness of the attack was captured on surveillance footage, which showed a young man approaching from the south side of the building. Without warning, the individual brandished a pistol and opened fire on the three men. The aftermath was devastating. Alongside Deontae Brown, 15-year-old Mario Favors also lost his life in the shooting. A third victim sustained injuries and was rushed to Grady Hospital for medical attention. It was noted by the apartment complex that none of the three victims were residents of the building where the shooting occurred.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, the Atlanta Police Department launched an investigation that led to an arrest. Eighteen-year-old Shoun Nai Gene Bilal was taken into custody and is facing serious charges, including aggravated assault and murder, in connection with the incident. While police believe the attack was not random and had a specific target, a definitive motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed.
The community was left to mourn the loss of two young lives cut short by gun violence. A Celebration of Life service for Deontae D. Brown was held on June 29, 2023, at the Living Faith Tabernacle Church in Forest Park, Georgia, where family and friends gathered to remember a life that ended far too soon. The investigation into the deaths of Deontae Brown and Mario Favors continues as the legal process against the suspect moves forward.
