On July 25, 2023, a 40-year-old White male named Franklin Campbell was fatally shot in Conyers, Georgia. The incident occurred at a residence on Highway 212 SW, where Campbell was discovered with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Despite being transported for medical attention, Campbell ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators from the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office began looking into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Their investigation led them to a resident of the home where the shooting took place, 34-year-old Melvin Briggs. After questioning and reviewing video footage from the area, authorities arrested Briggs in connection with Campbell's death.
Further investigation revealed that Campbell, who was described as being mentally ill, had walked onto Briggs' property. It is reported that Briggs fired a warning shot in an attempt to get Campbell to leave. When Campbell did not depart from the property, Briggs allegedly shot him. The firearm used in the shooting was later determined to have been stolen from Henry County.
Melvin Briggs has been charged with a number of serious offenses, including murder, aggravated assault, and reckless conduct. He also faces a charge of theft by receiving stolen property in relation to the stolen firearm. Briggs is currently being held at the Rockdale County Jail.
