In the early morning hours of August 26, 2023, the life of 19-year-old Khia Shields was tragically cut short in her mother's Wrens, Georgia, home. A Black female and a sophomore at Georgia Southern University, she was asleep on the living room sofa when a bullet pierced through the wall and struck her in the chest. The sudden violence shattered the quiet of the night and the lives of her family.
Awakened by the gunshot, Khia stumbled into her mother's bedroom, her hands outstretched as
she uttered the devastating words, 'Mommy, mommy, I'm shot.' Emergency services were called to the Washington Street residence around 1:00 a.m. and rushed her to Augusta University Medical Center. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later, just days after celebrating her birthday. Her mother, Shereka Pitts, was left to mourn her only child, a bright young woman who had graduated with honors and was working her way through college.
The initial investigation, led by the Wrens Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, pointed towards a possible drive-by shooting. For over a year, the case remained a primary focus for law enforcement as they pieced together evidence and followed leads. A significant point of interest for investigators was a black Chevrolet Impala that was seen in the area around the time of the shooting.
A major breakthrough in the case came in late October 2024, when authorities announced the arrest of 31-year-old Jessie Louis Brown, Jr., of Augusta. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Khia Shields and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. While the arrest brought a sense of relief to the family and community, law enforcement officials have indicated that the investigation is still ongoing and that further arrests are possible.
