In the winter of 2019, just four days before Christmas, the life of 38-year-old Oralia Melo Meza was tragically cut short in her Marietta, Georgia, home. A Hispanic mother of four, Meza was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Juan Antonio Gonzalez, then 33, in what prosecutors described as a jealous rage. The violent encounter unfolded on the evening of December 21st, when Gonzalez arrived at the Spring Valley Road residence to pick up the 4-year-old daughter he shared with Meza.
The situation escalated quickly after Meza gave Gonzalez the child's car seat and closed the door. Enraged, Gonzalez opened fire on the home, shooting through the door and windows. He then forced his way inside, searching for Meza. Her 16-year-old son bravely attempted to de-escalate the situation but was shot in the shoulder by Gonzalez. As Meza hid in a laundry closet, her friend, who was visiting at the time, ushered the other children into a bedroom to shield them from the unfolding horror. Gonzalez eventually found Meza and shot her multiple times. Witnesses reported hearing her screams as she staggered into the living room and collapsed, where Gonzalez fired several more shots into her body. One witness recalled him saying, 'If you can't be with me, you're not going to be with anyone else.'
When Cobb County police arrived at the scene in response to a call about an armed person, they found Gonzalez attempting to flee in his pickup truck. He fired at the responding officer, striking the patrol car, and then led police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of over 100 miles per hour. The pursuit ended when Gonzalez crashed his truck on South Cobb Drive near Highlands Parkway. Inside the home, officers discovered Meza's body and her injured teenage son, who was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Juan Antonio Gonzalez was arrested and subsequently charged with a litany of offenses, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, burglary, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. A Cobb County grand jury indicted him on these charges in March 2020. In April 2021, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault on a peace officer. During the sentencing hearing, Meza's son spoke of the enduring physical and emotional trauma of that night. Gonzalez, who confessed to the shooting and wrote an apologetic letter to his daughter, was sentenced to life in prison.
