In a tragic turn of events, 26-year-old Davon McDaniel was killed on June 22, 2024, in Smyrna, Georgia. A Black / African American man, McDaniel was the victim of gun violence. His life was honored by friends and family with a memorial service held on July 6, 2024, at Hollifield Mortuary in Atlanta. Classmates from the 2016 graduating class of Booker T. Washington High School were among those who fondly remembered him.
The circumstances surrounding McDaniel's death unfolded at his own apartment on Cumberland Glen Lane. Early one Friday morning, a 911 call was made by his roommate, George Perry, who was 40 years old at the time. During the call, Perry admitted to shooting McDaniel in the chest, though he offered no explanation for his actions.
Upon their arrival, police discovered McDaniel with a gunshot wound. Despite attempts to render aid, he was ultimately pronounced dead at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Perry, who was uninjured, was taken into custody at the scene. He declined to provide a statement to investigators without legal counsel present.
Subsequently, George Perry was arrested and faced charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He was then held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond.
