Shuyi Li, a 28-year-old Asian woman, was a promising graduate of Georgia Tech, having earned her Master's Degree in 2016. Originally from China's Guangdong Province, she had built a life in Smyrna, Georgia, where she worked at a business in nearby Canton. It was there she met Brian Marsh Semrinec, a 24-year-old U.S. Army veteran who had served in Afghanistan. The two began a romantic relationship that would eventually be marred by domestic violence, a darkness that would ultimately lead to a tragic end.
Concern grew when Shuyi failed to appear for her job on September 18, 2017. Colleagues, unable to reach her, requested that police perform a welfare check at her residence on Willington Shoals Place. When officers arrived, they were met with silence. After forcing their way into the home, they made a grim discovery. Shuyi's body was found wrapped in a blanket, partially concealed beneath a mound of spices and other household items. It was determined that she had died from multiple sharp-force and blunt-force injuries to her head and neck. An investigation quickly pointed to her live-in boyfriend, Brian Semrinec, as the primary suspect. Both her 2015 Honda CR-V and her credit cards were missing from the apartment.
In the days following the discovery, Semrinec became a fugitive. Authorities tracked his movements by following the use of Shuyi's credit cards. The manhunt led them to Dallas, Texas. It was there, several days after the murder, that Semrinec walked into a VA Hospital and confessed to a security guard that he had killed his girlfriend. He was arrested in Dallas and subsequently charged with aggravated assault and murder.
In November 2018, Brian Marsh Semrinec, then 25, appeared in Cobb Superior Court. A psychological evaluation requested by his defense found no issues with his competency or sanity. Facing the overwhelming evidence against him, he pleaded guilty to malice murder. Semrinec was sentenced to life in prison for the death of Shuyi Li. Under the terms of his sentence, he will be required to serve a minimum of 30 years before becoming eligible for parole consideration.
