In a tragic turn of events that stunned the small town of Manchester, Georgia, 17-year-old Brandon Smith, a male student and defensive lineman for the Manchester High School football team, was found dead just hours before he was scheduled to play in the state championship game. Smith was last seen alive on December 7, 2023, and was reported missing by his family two days later. On December 10, 2023, his body was discovered behind a residence on 3rd Avenue in Manchester. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation determined that he had been shot and killed following an argument on the day he disappeared.
The investigation into the high school student's death led to the arrest of two individuals. In January 2024, authorities charged 19-year-old A'darius Jashawn Williams with murder. Investigators stated that Williams, an acquaintance of Smith, had shot him after feeling disrespected because Smith had taken a gun from him days earlier. According to the district attorney's office, Williams ambushed Smith outside his home, chased him, and shot him. In May 2025, Williams pleaded guilty to malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and weapons possession charges. He received a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years.
Further investigation revealed the involvement of a second individual, leading to the arrest of 17-year-old Qua'vion Jakwon Cooper in May 2025. Cooper, who was a teammate on the football team with Smith, was charged with murder as a party to the crime. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation alleged that Cooper aided and abetted Williams in the killing. In a heart-wrenching detail, it was reported that Cooper had participated in the state championship game, even joining teammates in carrying Smith's jersey onto the field in a tribute, just a day after Smith's body was found and allegedly knowing of his involvement in the death.
