In the winter of 2023, a violent altercation at a convenience store in Augusta, Georgia, claimed the life of 32-year-old Jeremiah Emmanuel Griffin. A Black male, Griffin was at the Smart Grocery on Wrightsboro Road on the evening of Monday, December 11th, when a dispute escalated into a fatal shooting. Responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 8:50 p.m., Richmond County sheriff's deputies discovered Griffin with at least one gunshot wound.
Despite emergency response, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:30 p.m.
The investigation into Griffin's death quickly identified two suspects. Authorities alleged that 16-year-old Sanquan Berry shot Griffin during a fight. Following the shooting, Berry reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Tashanna Renee McDaniel. McDaniel was apprehended by law enforcement two days after the incident and has since been charged with murder. Berry, also a resident of Augusta, remains at large and is wanted on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.
The Smart Grocery where the shooting occurred has a documented history of violent crime, with numerous shootings reported at the location in recent years. This fatal incident was not the first to take place at the establishment, which is situated near apartment complexes that have also experienced high levels of crime. The death of Jeremiah Griffin added to the growing concerns of residents and local officials about the persistent violence in the area.
