In the winter of 2024, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Austell, Georgia. Twenty-year-old Kenneth McGrew, a Black male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Friday, January 26th. The incident unfolded on the 1300 block of Riverside Parkway in Cobb County, where police were dispatched just before 1:30 p.m. to investigate reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered McGrew suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical personnel rushed Kenneth McGrew to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Tragically, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The news of his passing sent ripples of grief through his community, with friends and loved ones taking to social media to post tributes and messages of sympathy for the young man.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Cobb County Police Department's Major Crimes Unit launched a swift and intensive investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of a suspect: 22-year-old Nijier Drakeford of Lithia Springs. Investigators secured arrest warrants for Drakeford on the charge of felony murder.
The search for the suspect concluded early the next morning, a Saturday, when Nijier Drakeford was apprehended in Atlanta. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
