In Augusta, Georgia, a young Black man's life was tragically cut short in an act of violence that stemmed from him defending his sister. Nineteen-year-old Makel Jones was a father to a one-year-old boy and an active member of his community, known for his time spent at the Boys and Girls Club. He also had an identical twin brother who is now left to mourn his profound loss.
The events leading to his death unfolded just before midnight on April 1, 2024, on the 2000 block of Bolt Drive.
The fatal encounter began with an altercation involving a male acquaintance and Jones's sister. According to Jones's aunt, the man struck his sister, prompting Makel to intervene and tell him to keep his hands off of her. This act of defense, however, led to a deadly escalation. The man reportedly left the scene only to return with a 40-caliber handgun. He then shot Jones in the stomach. Though rushed to Wellstar MCG, Makel Jones succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m. on April 2, 2024.
In the wake of the shooting, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation and identified 27-year-old Dominique Dezel Beal as the primary suspect in the murder of Makel Jones. Authorities have issued a warrant for Beal's arrest on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and a manhunt for him is currently underway. Beal is known to frequent the Spiderweb neighborhood in Beech Island and the Dogwood Terrace Subdivision in Augusta.
In connection with the homicide, investigators are also seeking another individual, 27-year-old Denzel Shaw, for questioning. Shaw is also known to frequent the same neighborhoods as Beal. He has multiple outstanding warrants for unrelated incidents through both the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the United States Marshals. The authorities are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of either Dominique Dezel Beal or Denzel Shaw to come forward as the investigation into the death of Makel Jones continues.
