In the early morning hours of August 4, 2019, the life of 42-year-old Marlow Andrew Jones, an African American male from Jackson, South Carolina, was tragically cut short in Augusta, Georgia. The fatal incident unfolded shortly after 1 a.m. in front of the Studio Neighborhood Bar on 11th Street, near Greene Street. It was there that Jones was shot at least one time. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Jones was pronounced dead from his injuries.
His body was later taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Lab for an autopsy to be performed.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that another man, 29-year-old Mario McKie, had also been shot and wounded during the same altercation. McKie was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for his injuries. As the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the Richmond County Coroner's Office delved into the case, their attention turned toward the surviving victim. In a turn of events, Mario McKie was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with the death of Marlow Andrew Jones.
McKie faced a slate of serious charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm. He was incarcerated for two years before he was granted bond in 2021, while the legal proceedings against him continued to move forward. The death of Marlow Andrew Jones was a deep loss for his community. He was remembered by friends and family as a gifted athlete in his high school years at Lucy C. Laney High School, where he excelled in basketball, football, and baseball.
