In the early hours of Monday, February 25, 1907, a dedicated officer of the Augusta Police Department, Walter S. Wilkins, met an untimely and tragic end. While on his patrol, Officer Wilkins was diligently checking the security of local businesses. As he examined the rear entrance of one establishment to ensure it was properly locked, a fatal misunderstanding unfolded.
