While on his patrol, Officer Wilkins was diligently checking the security of local businesses. As he examined the rear entrance of one establishment to ensure it was properly locked, a fatal misunderstanding unfolded.
The business owner, startled by the presence of someone at the back of his property in the darkness, tragically mistook Officer Wilkins for a burglar. In a fateful act of self-defense against a perceived threat, the owner discharged his shotgun. The blast struck Officer Wilkins, inflicting a mortal wound. The very man sworn to protect the community had been unintentionally killed by one of its members.
In the aftermath of the incident, it was determined that the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.
