In the late afternoon of a Tuesday in Warner Robins, Georgia, a dispute that began with words inside a convenience store tragically escalated, ending the life of a 24-year-old man. Zephaniah Langston, a Black male, was at the Pleezing Food Store on South Davis Drive on April 16, 2024, when an argument broke out. The disagreement spilled out of the store and into the open air, where it turned violent and deadly.
What started as a verbal altercation quickly devolved into a gunfight. Both Langston and 18-year-old Javon Charles drew firearms and exchanged shots. In the hail of bullets, both men were struck. Langston sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and leg. Though he was rushed to a nearby hospital, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arrival. Charles was also wounded in the exchange, having been shot twice.
The Warner Robins Police Department responded to the scene and began an investigation into the shooting. Javon Charles fled after the gunfire but collapsed a short distance away from the convenience store. He was taken to a medical center for treatment of his injuries. Investigators were able to match the bullets removed from Charles to the handgun that Langston had fired. Following the investigation, Javon Charles was arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including malice murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping.
The case proceeded to trial in Houston County Superior Court. In December 2025, a jury found Javon Charles guilty of the malice murder and kidnapping of Zephaniah Langston. Following the conviction, a judge sentenced Charles to life in prison with the possibility of parole, bringing a legal conclusion to the violent encounter that had claimed a young man's life more than a year and a half earlier.
