In the quiet of a Douglasville, Georgia evening on April 29, 2024, the life of 11-year-old Zander Whatley was tragically cut short. The young male was inside his home on Ruth Way when multiple gunshots were fired at the residence at approximately 11:00 p.m. A stray bullet struck Zander, who was then rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The community was left shaken by the senseless act of violence that claimed the life of an innocent child just shy of his twelfth birthday.
Zander was a fifth-grade student at Hal Hutchens Elementary School, where he was an active and proud member of the Student Council. Remembered for his vibrant spirit, he was an athlete who enjoyed playing soccer, baseball, and had recently completed a season of football. His family described him as a boy who loved the Lord, singing, TikTok, school, and spending time with his family and friends. The sudden loss of a child so full of life sent ripples of grief through his family and the wider community. His mother, Shareeda Alexander, recounted the horrific moment she discovered her son, saying she ran to his room and found him lifeless after her 14-year-old son's desperate 911 call.
In the months that followed, an extensive investigation was launched by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. The investigation, which spanned multiple states, led to the identification and arrest of five suspects. Authorities believe the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather stemmed from a dispute involving one of Zander's older siblings, making him an unintended victim.
The first arrests were made, bringing some measure of hope for justice to Zander's grieving family. The individuals taken into custody were identified as Nazier Anderson, 20, Al-Hamid Kuyateh, 20, Osman Sesay Jr., 19, and Modou Stephenson, 20. Sesay was apprehended in North Carolina following a traffic stop and awaited extradition, while Anderson surrendered to authorities. A fifth suspect, Joseph Tarawalie, was later located and arrested in Arlington, Virginia, on February 13, 2025. He was extradited back to Paulding County and, like the other suspects, is being held without bond. All five individuals face murder charges in connection with the death of Zander Whatley, a young boy whose future was stolen in a moment of senseless violence.
