KeAisa Kyneshia Young, a 16-year-old Black girl from Sylvester, Georgia, was killed late on June 15, 2024, in a shooting that shattered an ordinary summer night. According to investigators, Sylvester police were called at about 11:15 p.m. to the 200 block of Shipp Lane, where they found her suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities said she had been visiting friends when the violence broke through the evening, and despite that brief, casual setting, the moment became the last chapter of her
life. Her death quickly drew the involvement of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after the Sylvester Police Department asked for the agency’s help.
In the first days after the shooting, the case moved with the urgency that follows a teenager’s killing in a small community. Investigators identified a suspect as Kortezz Thomas, a 14-year-old from Sylvester, and the GBI said it obtained arrest warrants in connection with Young’s death. At that stage, officials said Thomas was not in custody and agents were searching for him, leaving the case suspended between grief and pursuit, with the circumstances leading up to the shooting still not publicly explained in detail. The sparse official facts only seemed to deepen the tragedy: a teenage girl dead, another teenager accused, and a neighborhood left with more questions than answers.
Then, on June 20, 2024, the case shifted from a manhunt to an arrest. The GBI reported that Kortezz Thomas turned himself in at the Sylvester Police Department and was taken into custody. Officials said he was charged with one count of felony murder and would be taken to a Youth Detention Center facility. The agency also said that once its investigation was complete, the case file would be turned over to the Tift Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution. Based on the online sources available, that is the clearest official public development in the case: one named suspect, one arrest, and a felony murder charge following Young’s death.
