In the small town of Ocilla, Georgia, a life was tragically cut short on the evening of Monday, June 24, 2024. On that day, 14-year-old Marcaulen Downs was shot on Frank Road. He was rushed to Irwin County Hospital, but the gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Ocilla Police Department requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into the shooting of the minor.
The investigation led to the arrest of another teenager, 16-year-old Earl Wilcox III, also from Ocilla. Wilcox was taken into custody and is facing serious charges, including one count of Felony Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault in connection with Downs's death. He is currently being held at a Regional Youth Detention Center. The local mayor indicated that the two teenagers were friends, adding another layer of tragedy to the incident.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is still active and ongoing. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is encouraging anyone with information to come forward and has provided multiple ways for the public to submit anonymous tips. Once the GBI's investigation is complete, the case will be handed over to the Tift Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
