In the late summer of 2024, a violent encounter in a northwest Atlanta apartment complex parking lot cut short the life of 23-year-old Marques Jenkins. On August 6th, Atlanta police officers were called to the Mark at West Midtown apartment complex in the Loring Heights neighborhood, where they discovered Jenkins in a gray Jeep, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head.
He was still alive when officers found him and was transported to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
According to court documents that later emerged, Jenkins was not alone that day. He and another man, 20-year-old Matt Washington, were reportedly breaking into cars in the parking lot at 500 Bishop Street when three men opened fire on them. In the aftermath of the shooting, Washington did not stay at the scene with the critically injured Jenkins.
The investigation into Jenkins' death led to a series of arrests over the following months. In total, six individuals were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Among them were Darius Blake, 19, and Malachi Sanabria, 18, who were both arrested in Morrow and faced outstanding murder warrants. Matt Washington, who was with Jenkins at the time of the incident, was also arrested. Another man, Cedron Tigner, was arrested on unrelated charges, and police later secured warrants against him related to Jenkins' death.
However, the legal proceedings that followed have been complex. While three of the suspects were initially charged with murder, some of those charges have since been dropped or dismissed by prosecutors or judges. For instance, the murder charge against Tigner was dismissed in October 2024. Washington was also booked on a murder charge, but it was later dismissed, and he was released after posting bond on four counts of entering an auto. The cases against the remaining suspects continue to move through the justice system.
