In the summer of 2024, the life of a bright and vibrant 11-year-old girl, Makenzie Briddy, was tragically cut short in what police have described as a murder-suicide. On the evening of August 11th, officers from the DeKalb County Police Department responded to a call at the Polo Club Apartments on Ashley Creek Circle in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Inside one of the apartments, they made a grim discovery: the bodies of Makenzie and her 31-year-old mother, Qiana Rainley. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Makenzie, an African American female, was remembered by her family as a social and fun-loving child who had a passion for fashion and being around people. Her brother, Christian, lovingly recalled how she considered everyone to be like a brother or sister to her. The young girl had recently graduated from the DeKalb County Police Department's Summer Survival Swim Program, and the department expressed their condolences, stating she was 'taken away from us way too soon.' Friends and family were left heartbroken and searching for answers in the wake of the devastating event.
The preliminary investigation led detectives to believe that Rainley shot her daughter before turning the gun on herself. As the primary suspect in her daughter's death is deceased, there will be no arrests or trial.
