In the summer of 2021, the life of 18-year-old Tori Lang was tragically cut short, leaving her family with unanswered questions and a long quest for justice. A recent graduate of Stephenson High School with aspirations of a degree in architectural engineering, her body was discovered on the morning of July 28th under a tree in Yellow River Park near Stone Mountain, Georgia. Parkgoers on their morning walk made the grim discovery and alerted the authorities. An apparent gunshot wound was the cause of her death. The investigation into her death took a dark turn when, less than a week later, her Nissan Versa was found burned out and abandoned in the Hidden Acres Nature Preserve, just a few miles from where her body was found.
The case remained without a suspect for months until April 2022, when police charged 20-year-old Austin Ford, described as Lang's best friend, with her murder. Ford was already in custody in another county on unrelated charges at the time the warrants were issued. He was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with Lang's death. The arrest brought a new wave of grief and confusion for Lang's family, who had known Ford as a close friend of their daughter's for years. The motive for the killing remained a mystery to them.
The legal proceedings that followed were fraught with complexity and heartache for Tori Lang's loved ones. Austin Ford's defense team argued that Lang's death was a suicide, a claim prosecutors vehemently disputed, pointing to Ford's inconsistent statements to the police. The medical examiner was unable to definitively determine if her death was a homicide or a suicide. The first trial, in April 2023, ended in a partial verdict. The jury convicted Ford on charges of concealing a death and theft by taking but was deadlocked on the more serious charges of murder and aggravated assault, resulting in a mistrial on those counts.
A second trial was held in August 2023, but it too ended with a hung jury on the murder charge, with the jury deadlocked 8-4 in favor of conviction. Following the second mistrial, the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office announced they would not seek a third trial for the murder charge. Ultimately, Austin Ford was sentenced to 20 years, with the first 10 to be served in prison, for the charges of concealing the death of another and two counts of theft by taking. He is also prohibited from having any contact with the Lang family. While a conviction for her death was not secured, the legal proceedings brought some measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the community.
