A celebration of what was to be Renesha Manuel's 28th birthday turned into a tragedy that ended her life. On the evening of Saturday, July 28, 2018, the 27-year-old woman was out with friends and family at a restaurant in DeKalb County, Georgia. An argument erupted between her and her 46-year-old boyfriend, prompting him to leave the establishment and head towards her apartment.
A friend gave Renesha a ride to her home at the Point Apartments on East Ponce de Leon Avenue in the Stone-mountain area. Upon their arrival, they were met with a troubling scene: the boyfriend's vehicle was wrecked at the entrance of the complex. Their concern grew when they reached Renesha's apartment and found the door ajar. Inside, her boyfriend was waiting, armed with a gun, amidst the disarray of a ransacked apartment.
Sensing the imminent danger, Renesha's friend fled to her car to call for help. As she ran, the sound of five gunshots pierced the night air. After contacting 911, she returned to the apartment to find that the boyfriend had vanished. Renesha Manuel had sustained fatal injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
