In what was described as a devastating act of domestic violence, Courtney Reese, a 32-year-old mother of four, was shot and killed in southeast Atlanta on the evening of August 20, 2024. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. near the intersection of Springside and Macon drives in the Glenrose Heights neighborhood. When Atlanta police officers arrived at the scene, they found Reese with multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite their life-saving efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into Reese's death quickly led authorities to identify 33-year-old Derrick Rankins as the suspect. The shooting, which was captured on a neighbor's Ring camera, showed Reese pleading with a man before he shot her multiple times. Just days after the incident, on August 27, a fugitive task force tracked Rankins to a home in Stockbridge to serve a warrant for Reese's murder.
As law enforcement attempted to apprehend him, Rankins barricaded himself inside the residence. A standoff ensued, during which Rankins fired at the officers, striking an Atlanta police investigator in the arm. The officer's injuries were not life-threatening. After a two-hour standoff, Rankins was found dead inside the home. Authorities did not immediately clarify whether he was killed by law enforcement or died by suicide.
Courtney Reese was remembered by her family as a vibrant and loving person who was the life of the party. Her death was a profound loss for her four children, three daughters and a son. Tragically, Reese's family had recently experienced another loss due to gun violence, as her younger sister had been killed just months prior. Following the standoff that ended the search for Reese's killer, Atlanta's mayor issued a statement decrying domestic violence as a national crisis.
