In the autumn of 2024, the life of 15-year-old Devayn Earl Grissam was tragically cut short in Augusta, Georgia. On the evening of October 30th, the Black / African American male teenager found himself in a fatal exchange of gunfire on Helsinki Drive, a place miles from his own home on Boykin Road. It was during this violent encounter that Grissam sustained a gunshot wound to his torso.
Despite being rushed to MCG Wellstar Health, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified 19-year-old Ricky Antwavious Holmes as a central figure in the incident. Authorities determined that Holmes and Grissam had been engaged in the gunfight that led to the younger man's death. Following the investigation, Holmes was taken into custody and formally charged with murder. He was subsequently booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center to await legal proceedings.
Further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting revealed the alleged involvement of a 16-year-old girl named Aukeidris Cooper, who resided on Helsinki Drive where the incident occurred. Investigators learned that Cooper had reportedly warned Grissam that a shooting involving him was imminent. Based on this information, Cooper was also arrested and charged with murder. The question of whether she would be tried as an adult, given her proximity to her 17th birthday, remained a consideration for the justice system. The arrests of both Holmes and Cooper brought a measure of relief to Grissam's grieving family, who were informed that those believed to be responsible for their loved one's death were now in custody.
