In an act of protection that tragically cost him his life, Tavarus Joiner, a 32-year-old male, was shot and killed in his Villa Rica, Georgia, home. The incident unfolded when Joiner provided a safe haven for his cousin, who was attempting to escape a dangerous and abusive relationship. The man at the center of this domestic turmoil, Karlton Sirmons, allegedly tracked the cousin to Joiner's residence.
In a violent intrusion, Sirmons is accused of kicking in the door to the home. Once inside, he reportedly opened fire, striking Joiner first. The violence didn't end there; Sirmons then allegedly shot Joiner's cousin eight times and also shot and assaulted Joiner's girlfriend, breaking her leg. Horrifically, Joiner's two young sons, aged three and five, were present and witnessed the brutal attack on their father and the other women in the house. While the two women survived the onslaught, Joiner succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Following the incident, law enforcement swiftly identified 35-year-old Karlton Sirmons as the primary suspect. He was apprehended shortly after fleeing the scene and now faces a litany of charges. These include two counts of murder, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree home invasion, and three counts of cruelty to children. Additionally, he faces charges of battery, criminal damage to property, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, among others. It was later revealed that Sirmons had a prior murder charge from 2019, for which he was acquitted. The family of Tavarus Joiner expressed their profound grief and devastation, remembering him as a silly, fun-loving, and protective man who was cherished by all who knew him.
