In the late afternoon of November 8, 2024, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of an apartment complex in unincorporated Norcross, Georgia. When Gwinnett County police officers responded to a call of a person shot at 2400 Windsor Woods Lane, they found the body of 16-year-old Jose Yahir Batz. The male teenager had been fatally wounded by at least one gunshot. Investigators believe an altercation involving at least two individuals escalated to gunfire, resulting in the young man's death at the scene. Near his body, a large pile of cash was found, suggesting a transaction may have preceded the deadly encounter.
Homicide detectives began canvassing the area, conducting interviews to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Initially, one unidentified person was detained in the immediate aftermath, as authorities worked to understand what had transpired at the Huntington Ridge Apartments. The investigation continued for more than two weeks as police sought to identify who was responsible for the armed robbery that turned fatal.
The investigation led Gwinnett County police to 17-year-old Jason Joel Ortiz of Norcross. On November 27, 2024, Ortiz was arrested and taken into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Gwinnett County Jail and charged with a string of serious felonies, including felony murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies. While an arrest has been made, authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing and have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
